The
North Coast Repertory Theatre, now in
its 23rd year of operations, has announced
plans to make renovations to its building
at 300 Fifth Street in Eureka to ensure
that the Theatre is accessible to all
persons, regardless of disability. “Our
building was constructed in 1923 as a
Salvation Army Hall. Of course, they
made buildings differently back then,”
explains NCRT Artistic Director Michael
Thomas. “For instance, stepping
inside the front door requires negotiating
one step—you don’t see that
in modern building codes. Even a
single step can be an impassable barrier
to people in wheel chairs or people using
walkers. We want to make our building
safe and accessible to everybody.”
The
Theatre is planning to construct a new
side entrance with a ramp, a new accessible
rest room, a safer front entrance, and
a marquee that will provide protection
from inclement weather and more light
at the front door. Plans have been
approved by the City of Eureka. “Now
we need the money to pay for the renovations,”
continues Thomas. “Everybody
loves the idea of making our building
accessible. We get inquiries regarding
accessibility during every one of our
productions. It is time to make this
happen.”
Cost
estimates for the renovations are approximately
$57,000. “We have raised $18,000
so far from our very generous patrons
and from a grant from the Green Diamond
Resource Company,” says Thomas. “Obviously,
we need more money. Many people don’t
realize that sales of tickets to our shows
do not cover all of our operating costs. We
are a non-profit volunteer based organization. The
funds needed for the renovations are far
above and beyond our normal operating
budget.” The Theatre is applying
for other grants and is planning a special
fundraiser later this year.
The
Theatre is accepting donations now. “Any
amount is helpful,” states Thomas. “We
hope to finish the renovations in time
for our 25th anniversary season in 2008-2009.” Donations
can be mailed to NCRT, 300 Fifth Street,
Eureka CA 95501. Contact: Michael Thomas,
